The City of Santa Clara runs a Pre-Approved ADU Plans Program. Its Building Division reviews vendor designs against building, energy, and reach codes, and approved plans still need a site specific submittal. The city says this leads to faster permit issuance.
ADUs in Sunnyvale
Sunnyvale offers a plans gallery of pre-approved ADU designs. A single family lot can have up to one new construction ADU, one conversion ADU, and one junior ADU of up to 500 square feet. New ADUs up to 800 square feet on single family lots can use a streamlined building permit, while larger ones first need a Miscellaneous Plan Permit from Planning. Units built inside a permitted structure before January 1, 2020 may qualify for legalization.
